The Last Lecture

Now we are at the last day of the year and it has really been a fruitful year for me. Since my last post in July, I have been to wonderful places like Cairo, Egypt and also Jordan. And, during these trips I have managed to visit the Wonders of the World such as the Pyramids in Egypt and Petra, Jordan. I am really amazed of the work done by the people that build the pyramids and also the Petra’s rock buildings in Jordan. Here’s some of my photos of the pyramids and Petra:

So, I was thinking if we, human beings can really build these wonders thousands years ago, we can even create more wonders. If you have visited Dubai, UAE before, you will know what I mean. They have all types of man-made wonders there. Highest building, largest made made islands, etc.

We have so much power to create ‘Wonders’ if we seriouosly put our mind together. Therefore, in the last moment of the year I would like us to create more ‘WONDERS’ for the world. For the last few months, we have more bad news than the good news so instead of us worrying, complaining,… Let’s focus our energy of making next year a better year.

Lastly, I would also like to share with you a video below. This video is the actual “Last Lecture” given by Randy Pausch in Carnegie Mellon University. This is a must watch or you can also purchase his bestselling book. “The Last Lecture”. Randy has just passed away not so long ago and this book is written when he found out that he has only a couple of months to live and he was going to give his “last lecture” to the world. Instead of talking about his sickness, he actually talked about his stories of fulfilling his dreams and how he helped others to fulfill their dreams too. Go watch this hour long actual “Last Lecture” now below and tell me how you feel… HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A “Kung Fu Panda” PRESENT for You!

“Yesterday is history,

Tomorrow is a mystery,

but Today is a gift.

That is why it is called the present.”

by Master Oogway from Kungfu Panda movie.

TODAY is the greatest GIFT that you have daily but what do you do with it?

Sometimes when we receive something so often (every day) that we do not know how to appreciate it any more. For example, when we receive so many similar gifts then we will value less of that particular gifts because we human tend to value scarcity, right? That’s why we always always put away the Greatest Gift (Today) that we have because we know we are going to have plenty of them.

Now, think of it this way. When suddenly you know that this greatest gift is going to be taken away, how would you react to this situation? I want you to think and get a piece of paper and write down what are you going to do if this is the last gift left for you. In short, you are not going to receive any new gift or present what are you going to do with the last gift?

….. Stop now and start think and write this down.

.

..

….

…..

……

…….

Now, take each of these items and come up with action plans on how to achieve them now.

Remember from now on, live each day as if it is your last and live it with passion!

Visualize, Act as If & Take Massive Actions (VAT)

With recent posting of Jack Canfield’s article, I would like to share with you my own experience. There are three important steps that I personally used all the time. They are:

  1. Visualize
  2. Act As If
  3. Take Massive Action

Visualize

All things are being created twice. First in our mind and before being created in real form. Just look at the products that we enjoy today. They are an idea in someone’s mind before they are being created, right? Same thing happen to us and our dreams and goals. First, we must be able to visualize as vividly as possible what our life is going to be like even before it actually happens. One of the useful tool you can use is called Visual Board. You can just get a piece of card board and then cut out the pictures of the things that will remind you of your goals. For me, I use microsoft powerpoint and create a page of pictures that remind me of my goals. For example, one of my goal is to speak in a new country every year. So, I’ll put up the picture of the country that I want to speak in and sometimes because of kiasu mentality so I put a few countries’ pictures that I want to speak in.

Act As If

After visualize my goal then what I will do is to Act As If I am a renowned speaker and I continue to visualize the process of being invited by different companies from the countries that I wanted to speak in. Then, I will act as if I am already that speaker and I imagine how I impress the audience with my training and how I help my clients improve and deliver results that they wanted.

Some people think this may be something crazy because it is just pure a mind play only. When I started off, there is a small voice saying that to me too but, luckily there’s another louder voice told me, “what do you got to lose if these visualization didn’t come true?” So, what the heck? I just do it anyway. Any how I guarantee you will definitely feel good feeling about it. But don’t stop there. The next step is a very important step to convert your dreams or visualization into REALITY.

Take Massive Actions

If you miss out this one step, I can guarantee you almost 100% your dreams will not come true. After you take the second step of Act As If then you can analyze your current state compare to what you want to be, basically you will know the gaps that you need to Take Massive Actions to close the gaps. Normally, I would map out during my own coaching session and this is a very structure way on how let your gaps show up so that we can come up with actions roadmap for yourself.

This is not a guarantee easy way but I guarantee if you seriously follow these three steps, it will move you closer towards your goals. Now back to the one goal that I set few years ago about speaking in a new country a year in order to become an international speaker. I actually realize that dream 6 months after I set the goal and frankly, when I set the goal I have no idea on how to achieve that goal at all. And, thank God while taking these three steps that I share with you, today I have spoken in 10 countries now. In fact, I have the chance to speak in more countries but I have to turn down due to my heavy schedule. I am sharing with you this story is to inspire you to take these three steps and start realize your dreams too.

Simplify Your Life

Here’s some tips on How to Simplify Your Life:

  • Think about your values and write down those that really matter to you. What is most important? Spending time with family? Accumulating great wealth? Achieving powerful influence? Acquiring possessions? Expressing yourself? Learning new ideas? Experiencing adventure and travel? Maintaining excellent health? Socializing with friends? Contributing to the community? You can’t do them all. Cut out activities that aren’t consistent with your core values.

  • Write a list of goals you’d like to achieve. Focus on doing a few really well, rather than a lot in a mediocre way. You can’t add hours to the day, but you can cut down on activities.

  • Say no instead of yes. People agree to requests from others because they like to please them. Instead, realize that you have a right to say no. Creating plans or policies makes saying no easier. (“I’m sorry, I already have a financial planner.” “I’m sorry, we already have a plan for giving to charities.”)

  • Stop being a slave to communication tools. Do you really need an office phone, a home phone, a cellular phone, pager, fax, e-mail and internet ICQ technology?

  • Give away clerical tasks to others who can handle non-priority activities.

  • Stop spending time to save money. Instead, spend money to save time. Don’t drive across town to save a few cents on a grocery item. It’s not worth your time. Do hire someone to do chores you’re not fond of.

  • Cancel subscriptions to magazines you never get around to reading. Only read one newspaper per day.

  • Cut back on television time. Only watch those shows you decide on beforehand. Circle them in the television-listing magazine. Then turn off the television when the program is over. Cancel extra cable television packages for channels you rarely watch. Go for broke. Give up watching television altogether.

  • Clean out your basement or your office. If you’re not using something, get rid of it. Put an expiry date on items when you can’t decide to keep them or not. Get rid of them when the expiry date arrives.

  • Quit organizations that aren’t contributing to your advancement, your network or your fun.

  • Automate repetitive, clerical, mechanical tasks. For instance, set up automatic bill payments. Include your automatic savings plan as part of your monthly spending.

  • Make a plan for the weekend that doesn’t involve work. Plan to spend more time with your family or with people who make positive contributions to your life. Stop spending time with people who are a drain on your energy or vitality.

  • Carry a smaller wallet or purse. Start by cleaning out the one you’ve got. Get rid of unnecessary credit cards and other clutter that you don’t use regularly.

  • Stop checking up on your financial portfolio every day. Most people invest for the long term. Checking your results daily adds to stress and might lead to expensive and unnecessary changes.

  • Make time for yourself. Set aside time each day to reflect quietly, go for a walk, plan for your future or meditate. Visit the park instead of the mall.

  • Cut back on debt. Consolidate your different debts into one and pay it off. Put your credit cards in a spot where you won’t be able to use them until you’re debt-free. Track your expenses for a month, then cut back your spending on items you don’t need. For instance, pack a lunch rather than buying one at work. Mix and match your outfits rather than constantly buying new ones.

  • Consider renting a vacation home rather than buying. You won’t be burdened by time (and money) spent in maintenance. Also, this allows you to visit a different spot each year.

  • Plan time for a vacation every year. Some people claim “I haven’t had a vacation in three years” as if it was a badge of courage. It isn’t.

  • Cut back on your children’s planned activities. If they have to use a time planner to schedule their activities, and you spend all of your time taxiing them around, they’re probably too busy.

  • Live closer to your work so you don’t have to drive.

  • Take a moment each day to be grateful.

There are many tips as written above for us to not just ponder but taking actions. So, today, pick one of the tips up there and commit to start doing it NOW. Remember: Your Success is In Your Hands, So Take Actions Now!

Power of a Positive Attitude

I am going to ask you to do something very weird right now.

Firstly, I want you to listen to your thoughts. Now tell me, what thoughts fill your head? Would you label them as positive, or negative?

Second, let’s say you are walking down the street with these thoughts. Do you think anyone who would meet you would be able to tell you what’s on your mind?

The answer to the number one question is up to you.

But, the answer to number two question can be pretty generic. Although people will not be able to tell you exactly what you think, they will most probably have an idea of how you are feeling.

Here’s another question. When you enter a party filled with friends, do they all fall silent as if something terrible had happened? Or does everybody there perk up as if waiting for something exciting to happen?

You know what? The answer to all these depends on your frame of mind.

Thoughts are very powerful. They affect your general attitude. The attitude you carry reflects on your appearance, too – unless, of course, you are a great actor.

And it doesn’t end there. Your attitude can also affect people around you.

The type of attitude you carry depends on you. It can be either positive or negative.

Positive thoughts have a filling effect. They are admittedly invigorating. Plus, the people around the person carrying positive thoughts are usually energized by this type of attitude.

Negative thoughts, on the other hand, have a sapping effect on other people. Aside from making you look gloomy and sad, negative thoughts can turn a festive gathering into a sad event.

A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative attitude repels them. People tend to shy away from those who carry a negative attitude.

We can also define attitude as the way of looking at the world. If you choose to focus on the negative things in the world, more or less you have a negative attitude brewing up. However, if you choose to focus on the positive things, you are more likely carry a positive attitude.

You have much to gain from a very positive attitude. For one, studies have shown that a positive attitude promotes better health. Those with this kind of attitude also have more friends. projecting a positive attitude also helps one to handle stress and problems better than those who have a negative attitude.

A positive attitude begins with a healthy self-image. If you will love the way you are and are satisfied, confident, and self-assured, you also make others are around feel the same way.

A negative attitude, on the other hand, has, of course, an opposite effect. So, carrying a negative attitude has a twofold drawback. You feel bad about yourself, and you make others feel the same way.

If you want to have a positive attitude, you have to feature healthy thoughts. This is probably very hard to do nowadays since, all around us, the media feeds us nothing but negative thoughts. A study shows that for every 14 things a parent says to his or her child, only one is positive. This is truly a saddening thought.

If you want a healthier outlook in life, you need to think happy thoughts, and you have to hear positive things as well. So, what can you do? Well, for starters, you could see a funny movie, you could play with children, spend some time telling jokes with friends. All these activities fill you with positive stimuli, which in turn promotes positive attitude.

Although it is impossible to keep ourselves from the negative things around us, you can still carry a positive attitude by focusing on the good things, the positive things in life.

And this positive attitude you now carry can be of benefit to other people. Sometimes when other people feel down, the thing people mostly do is try to give them advice. But sometimes, all they need is somebody to sit by them, and listen to them. If you have a positive attitude you may be able to cheer them up without even having to say anything. Vietnam Team Building
If positive attitude is really great, why do people choose to adopt a negative attitude instead? One who carries a negative attitude may be actually sending a signal for attention. Before you get me wrong, feeling sad, angry, or gloomy is not wrong itself. But dwelling on these thoughts for far too long is not healthy either. There is a time to mourn.

As always, if you are beset by troubles, even in your darkest hour, focus on the good things in life, you will always have hope. Problems become something you can overcome.

You do not have much to lose by adopting a healthy, positive attitude. Studies show that such an attitude actually retards aging, makes you healthier, helps you develop a better stress coping mechanism, and has a very positive effect on all the people you meet every day.

So, let’s start adopting a Positive Attitude today!

Are You Comfortable With Yourself Now?

Are you feeling comfortable with who you are and what you have now? If the answer is YES, then you are in your COMFORT ZONE. Is this good or bad for you? Let’s listen to what Brian Tracy, a world famous speaker and author talks about our COMFORT ZONE…

Now tell me what do you think…

Remember last week your assignment is to find someone that can help coaching you. Have you found your coach already? If not, STOP reading further and go find someone that you respect and ask them to be your coach and in return, offer yourself to be their coach as well. Now this process will help you learn to be a Great Coach. You can click on the below green icon showing “Share This” and then you can email your friends or potential coach to get them to read the Success Moments ezine and then once they understand the purpose, you can ask them to be your coach.

Once you have someone ready, now here are some of the steps that I want you to take:

1. Draft out a contract stating both (if you coach each other) will be responsible for their own success and will put in all your effort to take actions on the tasks or activities that you have committed to your coach. Sign your name on it.

2. Decide what is the duration of your coaching session and how frequent you want to have this session. My suggestion is to start with max. 1 hour every week.

3. Next tell your coach about the goals and what are the immediate goals that you want to achieve in short term (such as 30 – 90 days)

4. Then, you need to commit to do the actions that will bring you towards your goals. It may be something that you are not comfortable to do. Remember the video above, a Leader always find things that are out of their comfort zone to do. So, once you continue to do that, these tasks will no longer be uncomfortable. That’s how you will grow and attain success.

5. So, as a coach you will push your coachee to move out if their comfort zone and achieve more.

This week I want you to do the above 5 steps and let me know whether it works or not. I can tell you it will definitely works but it doesn’t mean that everything will suddenly flow smoothly. You’ll definitely have obstacles but if you persists, you will definitely taste success. Have you seen the motivational video on the handicapped dancers? If not, CLICK HERE to check it out. Lastly, here is a video to show you that we can perform more than what we believe we can do and you just need a coach to push us through to our SUCCESS.

If you have any questions or comments, please do post it here by just clicking the comment icon below.

Can a Coach help you to achieve Success?

Coach is commonly found in the sports world. I would say all professional players, no matter which sports they are in, have their own coach or a lot of them coaches. Now, have you wondered why a world-class player such as Tiger Woods would still need a coach? Do you think that the coach can be a better golf player than him? I don’t think so. But, why does he spends millions of dollars to get someone who cannot play as well as him to be his coach? He must be crazy, right?

No. He is not crazy because he knows that Coaching is a MUST for him to succeed in his game. So are all the successful sports players. Now let’s look at ourselves. Do you want to achieve success? By now, if you go through the previous learning videos and lessons, you should know what your success is, right? If not, stop reading now and go back to the first post and go through the whole learning again. Knowing what success is for you is the most important thing for you to be successful. If you don’t know what success means to you then how do you know whether you are successful or not. It is like you want to take a trip but you don’t know where are you going to. In that case, do you think you can reach your destination? No. Because you don’t even have a destination.

Now, if you already know your destination and you have work out your plan like I show you using the templates that are in the member’s download area, then now it is time to take action. However, do you sometimes get busy and suddenly you are going back to the same old way of doing things, instead of doing something different that will help you move towards your success. There’s a saying, “Old Habits Die Hard”. It is not easy to eliminate an old habit and also not easy to develop a new habit. That’s why we all need a coach as well to help remind us when we divert from our improvement roadmap and give us a kick if we stop doing what’s right. Do you agree?

I was introduced to coaching many years ago and I even took the professional coaching certification to learn about coaching and at the same time, I also work with a number of coaches to help me to achieve my goals. And, I can gladly tell you that I never regret engaging a coach to work with me because since I have someone to coach me, I actually successfully achieve more of my goals than before.

Now if you do not know what coaching is. Here’s a short video to show you what it is:

So, now your assignment for this week is to go out and find someone who shares the same interest with you wanting to improve or kaizen themselves (you can tell them about personal kaizen or the best way is to ask them to subscribe to this Success Moments and go through these lessons) and get him or her to be your coach. Your job for this week is very easy only, just to get someone agree to your coach and you can offer to be his or her coach in return.

For the next lesson, I will give you more tips on how to coach each other to be successful in a simple way.

What can stop you from Success?

A friend of mine sent me this video and it is about two dancers. And, they have just won the Silver medal out of 7000 competitors in China. You may ask what is so special about just winning the silver medal, right?

Now, I want to read their story as highlighted by CCTV channel in China before I show you the video of their dance. This is a MUST READ story and I guarantee you that they are definitely not what the ordinary dancers.

Here’s their story:
“The girl (Ma, Li) was a beautiful promising professional ballerina when she lost her right arm in a car accident in 1996. She was only 19. Her handsome boy friend walked away from her. She tried to kill herself only to be saved by her parents. Her love for her parents gave her the strength to live. She learned how to live her life independently.

She learned how to write Chinese beautifully and how to do many things including combing her hair, which she had to cut short from the waist-length to shoulder-length. She learned to cook and to wash clothes … In a few months she opened her small bookstore.

Five years later in 2001, she was invited to compete at the 5th national special performing art competition for handicaps and won the gold medal. That success gave her the hope to return to her beloved stage.
In 2002, a handsome 20-year-old young man (Li, Tao) madly fell in love with her. She ran a way from him for fear of being hurt again.

After she disappeared in Beijing, Tao searched her up and down despite his parents’ strong objection and ridicule. He finally found her dancing in a bar. They have never been separated since.

They were very broke when SARS was spreading because all theaters were closed. In 2004, he got a license to be her legitimate agent and was trying to help her develop a unique performance. In a cold snowy night, when the two huddled in an underpass to wait for the sunrise in order to catch a bus after a long day at a movie shooting site working as extras, she suddenly had the urge to dance in the snow with him. She had used her dance to tell him her story so many times before and this time, after their “dance” ended, he suddenly realized that THIS should be her unique performance.

In September 2005, she ran into a 21-year-old young man (Zhai, Xiaowei). He was being trained to be a cyclist for the national special olympics. He had never danced before.

He climbed on a tractor when he was 4 years old and fell off it and lost his left leg. His dad asked him, “The doctor will have to amputate your leg. Are you afraid?” He couldn’t comprehend what would be so different so he said no. His dad said, “You are going to face many challenges and difficulties in life, are you afraid?”
He asked, “What are ‘challenges and difficulties?’ Do they taste good?” His dad laughed with tears, “Yes, they’re like your favorite candies. You just need to eat them one piece at a time!” (Then his dad ran out of the room in tears.)

So he’s always very optimistic and athletic with a great sense of humor. He had tried high-jump, long-jump, diving, swimming, and just settled on cycling. His coach believed that he would be able to get 2-3 gold medals in the national special Olympics games. (In the video interview, you can see him doing a bridge with great ease!)

He initially didn’t understand how he could “dance,” so Li invited him to see her performing “Hand in Hand” with another male actor. He felt that he saw a perfect soul dancing on the stage and agreed to give it a try.
Li & Tao treated him like their younger brother and they stayed under the same roof during the more than 1 year of intensive training and practice. One would not be able to imagine the kind of challenges and difficulties they faced. He had NO dancing background and she is a perfectionist. There are so many touching stories.
Much determination has gone into the making of this performance. Just for that one “drop” move at 3:41 of the clip, he landed her on the hard floor more than 1000 times!!! To get the move right, they started at 8 a.m. and got the first successful move shortly after 8 pm!

All they did was to train and to practice from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. day-in and day-out until the three of them ran out of money in early 2007 …

The rest is history. In April they were one of the finalists among 7000 competitors in the 4th CCTV national dance competition. It is the first time a handicapped couple ever entered the competition. They won the Silver medal with the 99.17 high score and not to mention the highest audience popular votes. They became an instant national hit.

http://english.cctv.com”

Now, do you agree that they are not the ordinary dancer? To me, they are indeed a pair of extra-ordinary dancer. Now watch their dance video here…

I hope their story does inspire you. When you think about it, when we have all the hands, legs, and almost everything but we always feel we lack of something to be successful. If you think about it, how can a dancer without arm partner with another dancer without leg (double whammy) be successful? To normal people, they are bound for failure. But, even with double the problems or challenges, they are able to excel.

But, it doesn’t mean that everything is a bed of roses for them. Look at the time they put in to learn and practice. They are willing to put in all their heart and soul and just to make what they do a success. What I learn from them is that if we really want to achieve something, don’t TRY but really put in all our heart and soul to make them come true.

In the next few days, it is the Chinese New Year again and it is a time of thanksgiving again and we should appreciate with what we have and start utilize the talents, skills, knowledge, etc that we have to make our goals come true rather than complaint of what we are lacking. So, take this opportunity to think again what you can do to make this world a better place to live in and in Personal Kaizen, we call this the hansei time. Don’t just be busy, busy, busy in this Chinese New Year. Remember to stop and think for your success.

Finally, I would like to wish those who celebrate Chinese New year a Happy and Blessed New Year and don’t let any obstacles stop us from succeeding like these two dancers.

By the way, if you want to watch their touching interviews (it is in Chinese) below are the videos. And, don’t forget to give us your comments on what you learn from them.

Your Decision is Shaping Your Destiny…

Have you listen to Tony Robbins talk about our Belief system in my previous Success Moments?
If not, please go and check it out here: …

Today, you going to listen to him speaking again at this special talk where he speaks to the CEOs of the leading technology companies. Before you start, I want you to take a pen and a piece of paper and write down the key points that you learn from this video.

Are you ready? (Note: if your internet connection is slow, you can click play then press pause and wait till the red meter is complete then play again so that you can listen to what Tony says clearly)

Here’s Tony Robbins…

He really speak fast, right? However, he does cover a lot of important points to help us get our success. If needed, you may replay and listen again.

Now the Key Point that I want to emphasize is “Decision shapes your destiny”. Your DECISION to take actions! And, now my question to you is “Have you make up your mind to go after what you want?”

We have been talking about goal setting or new year resolution since the beginning of this year and by now you should make up your mind to go after what you want, right? NOW, it is the DECISION time not tomorrow, not after the coming Chinese New Year,…

The DECISION that you make now is going to shape your FUTURE. So, if you are clear what future you want to have then you have to make that decision now. I have known a lot of people that want to have many things in their life but when come to making decision to take action, they will just delay the decision making and by the time, they realize it, they are seeing an old face in the mirror.

During a survey done on the people age 60s and above, they were asked, “what are one thing that you going to do if you are able to turn back the clock for 30 years?” Majority of them say that they wish they would take more risk and make the decisions that they keep postponing. So, now do you have an action that you are postponing that you know if you take that step, it will lead you to the goal that you want?

You don’t have to answer me but you owe that answer to yourself.

Make that Decision Now and Make Your Goals Come True!!!
